The Dead of Night (After Tu Fu)
THE DEAD OF NIGHT (After Tu Fu)

Mornings, I used to run.
Now I sleep instead.
Nights, I sit alone,
and think of the past.
When my wife and I
were young,
I thought nothing
was beyond my grasp.
My wife is no more.
As mice rummage
Nervously in their holes,
the moon grins eerily,
and I sit up in my bed.
In the darkness,
I hear something scream.
The gods favor the quick.
The rest will be dead.
