Bacchus Goes to AA

The first three of the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous:
1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
His figure swallowed the folding
chair and the tufts of his toga
filled the room so that everyone
could pull them over their laps
as afghans. “...I think it’s because I
grew up in a culture of indulgence,”
he says. The group leader nods
her head, accepting helplessness
was a breakthrough. “Now appeal
to your higher power and ask
for help.”
“I am a higher power,”
Bacchus responds.
“Great, now ask him for help.”
